Call of Duty: Black OPs 4 will be the first mainline COD game to not feature a single player narrative campaign, according Polygon, who are reporting claims made by people reportedly close to the game’s development.

The sources have apparently said that as the release date for Call of Duty: Black OPs 4 drew nearer, it became evident that Treyarch had no intention of including a single player campaign and instead focused their resources on expanding the multiplayer and zombies mode.

This will not be the first time a AAA game will release without a single player campaign, as was the case with EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront in 2015. EA since backtracked on this decision with the Battlefront franchise, opting to include a single player campaign in the 2017 sequel.

The decision not to include a single player campaign in Call of Duty: Black OPs 4 could go either way in terms of fan backlash as the longevity of COD games is often due to their multiplayer modes and zombies DLC. Choosing to focus on and refine these features for the upcoming COD game could be a boon for Treyarch and Activision, rather than the failing it was for EA.

When Activision were approached for comment, a spokesperson said, “We don’t comment on rumor and speculation. We look forward to revealing Black Ops 4 on May 17th.”

Activision are also speculated to reveal further details at E3 in June and Call of Duty: Black OPs 4 is slated to release on 12th October across PS4, Xbox One and PC.
